INTRODUCTION
David and Chris spice up their stagnant relationship by turning to a gay dating app, but this unwittingly throws their lives into turmoil.
Who Are We? is an episodic film, set on the backdrop of Vienna, about two gay couples Lukas & Raphael and Chris & David, who struggle against the anger, jealousy, and secrecy that threatens their relationships.
The film explores the topic of RELATIONSHIPS
and one of the central themes in the story is CHANGE.
Every character experiences change on some level.
Lukas needs change but is avoiding it.
Raphael is trying to change Lukas.
David hates the idea of change.
Chris needs change but tries to change David.
The characters are not communicating very successfully with each other, which is ultimately what causes their downfall. They struggle to communicate on many levels and so the film really is about the communication of relationships in a digital age.
The Mobile phone motif features throughout the film and is a narrative device to highlight our dependency on swiping and tapping our way through life.
We ask the question has it become easier to communicate through a digital device as opposed to communicating on a human-to-human level. The story provides social commentary on the ease at which a sexual partner can be found with just a swipe of a finger but questions whether the true essence of our needs is being addressed.
